- Member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for FP7 Environment (including climate change (2006-2008))
- Member of grant evaluation panels for EC since framework 4, for the European Space Agency, for NERC (UK) and for NSF (USA).
UK Related Sustainability Work:
Leader of Sustainability discussion groups in the city of Bristol (2005-2008) that laid the vision for the City Council for the Bristol green capital of Europe (short-listed 2009).

Author of over 100 scientific publications, book chapters and reports.
Current Research:
- Sustainability Science. Focus is on natural resource availability, food security, soil sustainability and frameworks for sustainable communities
- Systems dynamics studies of financial systems as well as systemic diseases

Current Associate Editor of Solutions, a journal that emphasizes solutions for sustainability. Associate Editor for eEarth (2006-2009), Geochemical Transactions (2000-2011), Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta (1999-2002) and Chemical Geology (1996-2009).
Learned Societies Board Memberships:
Board member and Vice-President of the Balaton Group (2009-pres). Council member and Chair of Schumacher Society (2006-2011). Both have been working on sustainability issues for 30 years. Board Member for International Medical Geology Association (2004-2006), the Geochemical Society (1999-2001), the Geological Society of Great Britain (1999-2001) and the European Association for Geochemistry (1997-2000).
