RESEARCH INTEREST AND STRATEGY

The candidate scientific goal is to conceptually advance the understanding of fundamental processes of rifting, passive margins evolution, seafloor spreading, and subduction systems. For this end, he has specialized in complex, multi-disciplinary experiments, coordinating teams of multi-national scientists to acquire data during numerous cruises that have produced major breakthroughs. Based on seismic imaging and multibeam mapping, he has lead several drilling projects for ground-truthing and to constrain competing models. After being awarded an ICREA Research Professor in 2005 (Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis), he created the Barcelona Center for Subsurface Imaging (Barcelona-CSI) in 2007, where he currently coordinates the development of novel technologies to estimate physical properties and subsurface structure at the highest possible resolution and lowest uncertainty. The know-how of the Barcelona-CSI have permitted to seek funding from both government and industry stakeholders.

LEADERSHIP

• 2007 head of the Barcelona Center for Subsurface Imaging formed by 6 senior scientists and typically ~6-8 postdoc, ~6-8 PhD, and ~1-2 MSc students yearly and 1-2 several-months visitors
  
• Supervisor of 8 MSc works, 10 PhD works, and over 20 (currently 5) postdocs
  
• Co-lead of an International Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) proposal drilled offshore Costa Rica in 2 legs
  
• Lead Proponent of Flagship IODP proposal Costa Rica Seismogenic Project (CRISP)
  
• Lead proponent in IODP proposal TIME to drill the Tyrrhenian

FUNDING

• 2007-2018 PI of ca. 4.5 Mill. € from Spanish Ministry and EU projects, and ca. 7 Mill. € from industry stakeholders. Projects integrated 7 ship cruises.
