- 1966 - completing his studies in English philology with a Sofia University diploma (equivalent to M.A. degree)
- 1967 - 1971 Postgraduate student of English literature at Sofia University, working on a dissertation on John Donne's reform of Elizabethan poetic imagery and beginning to teach seminar classes on Renaissance literature (spending the first academic year of the postgraduate course at Sussex University, UK, as an exchange student)
- 1970-1971 Lector in Bulgarian language and literature at the School of Slavonic and East-European Studies, London University, UK
- 1972 - public defence of the dissertation earning him the degree Candidate of Philological Sciences (equivalent to Ph.D.) Appointed Assistant-Professor at the Department of English Philology, Sofia University
- 1978 - promoted to the rank of Associate Professor on the basis of accumulated publications and a book-size study of the Renaissance humanist mindset in Shakespeare's Sonnets
- From 1976, teaching the lecture course in Renaissance literature and a couple of years later introducing the new course in Literary Stylistics
- 1977 - 1979 Head of the Department of English Philology at Sofia University
- 1979 - 1981 Fulbright Lecturer of Bulgarian Language, literature and culture at UCLA, USA
