Freysteinn Sigmundsson - Curriculum Vitae#
AREAS OF RESEARCH
Studies of volcanism, magmatic and tectonic processes, plate spreading, earthquakes, and glacioisostasy, including the response of the Earth to present day retreat of Icelandic ice caps. Application of Global Positioning System (GPS) geodesy and interferometric analysis of synthetic aperture radar images (InSAR) to map deformation and study geological processes, using opportunities provided by the Iceland natural laboratory. Interest and research work is reflected by the titles of publications. Actively involved in international collaborative research on volcanism and crustal deformation. Point of contact for the Icelandic volcanoes permanent geohazard supersite (under the GEO Geohazard Supersites and Natural Laboratories (GSNL) initiative, with support from CEOS, the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites. Coordinator of project FUTUREVOLC (A European volcanological supersite in Iceland: a monitoring system and network for the future) 2012-2016
EDUCATION

RESEARCH GRANTS
- VOLCANO ANATOMY, grant of excellence project funded by the Icelandic Research Fund, 2011-2014. Total ISK 74.7 million ISK (about 503 thousand EUR). PI.
- FUTUREVOLC, a 26-partner project funded by FP7 Environment Programme of the European Commission, addressing topic “Long-term monitoring experiment in geologically active regions of Europe prone to natural hazards: the Supersite concept”. The project started 1 October 2012 and had duration of 3.5 years. The supersite concept implies integration of space and ground based observations for improved monitoring and evaluation of volcanic hazards, and open data policy. The project was led by University of Iceland together with the Icelandic Meteorological Office. Total 5,99 million euros to the 26 partners. PI.
