Jean-Luc Starck - Biography#

Dr. Jean-Luc Starck is Director of Research at CEA-Saclay, France. He holds a Ph.D from Nice Observatory (1992) and a Habilitation from the University Paris XI. In 2010 he founded and has been leading since, the “CosmoStat lab” at CEA, an interdisciplinary research group, currently having 20 researchers. His group is performing cutting edge research at the interface between astrophysics, cosmology and statistics, with strong interests in applications for space missions as well as developing close industry-academia partnerships. He has been a frequent visitor of several institutions including ESO, UCLA, Stanford, the Flatiron Institute, and FORTH. In 2011 his expertise along with his experience in management was recognized by the Science Board of the Euclid Space Telescope mission of ESA. Euclid is the largest astrophysics collaboration so far, as it involves over 1500 members in 18 countries. He was appointed leader and coordinator of a Unit of 250 engineers and researchers responsible of providing the algorithms for the entire end-user scientific products of this 1 billion Euro mission.

Dr. Starck served as the first vice-president of the International Astrostatistics Association (2012-2018) and is a fellow since 2016. He has received the EADS prize of the French Academy of Science in 2011, as well as the 2018 Gruber Prize in Cosmology (as a member of the ESA Planck team). Over the last 10 years, he has been awarded as Co-I or PI 8MEuros in competitive research funding including an Advanced ERC.

He has published over 350 refereed papers in astrophysics, cosmology, signal processing and applied mathematics, which have received more than 68,000 citations (source Google Scholar), and he is also author of three books. Currently he is mainly interested in various aspects of cosmology and he is heavily involved in the Euclid space mission of ESA, which will be launched in 2022.
