Christodoulos Stefanadis - Biography#
He is an emeritus and honorary professor at the Medical School of the University of Athens. His research includes coronary heart disease, the diagnosis and treatment of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque, the elastic properties of the aorta, new stent design and human application, mitral regurgitation, invasive treatment of refractory hypertension and the design of multiple types of catheters used in various diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and invasive procedures.
He completed his specialization in Cardiology, at the Cardiology Clinic of the University of Athens (1978), and then received a doctorate from the Medical School of Athens (1981). He has been a professor of Cardiology since 2008 and served as the Vice-President of the Medical School of Athens, from 2003 to 2007. From 2007 to 2011, he was the President of the Medical School of Athens, while in the periods 1997 - 1997 and 2007 - 2009 he was the President of Hellenic Society of Cardiology. He has been the Vice President of ESET (Hellenic National Council for Research and Technology) from 2005 - 2009. He is the President of the Research Institute for Longevity and the Prevention of Aging Diseases.
He also served as the Chairman of the National Bioethics Committee from 2014 - 2015. From 1995 until today he remains a Member of the Board of the Hellenic Heart Foundation. He is a Professor of Cardiology at Emory University (Atlanta) from 2014 until today, and Yale University (Connecticut) in the USA from 2014 until 2020.
One of his many research activities includes the design of at least ten original cardiac catheters that have been used in various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. In the first steps of his career he developed the technique of retrograde non-transseptal mitral valve, a balloon valve which was used internationally for the invasive treatment of mitral valve stenosis. He also introduced for the first time the idea of covering non-thrombotic metal stents covered by autologous veins or arteries.
He studied the elastic properties of the aorta and the function of the left atrium of the heart by means of special designed catheters. Much of his research efforts have been devoted to experimental and clinical studies of coronary heart disease, such as the calculation of the thermal inhomogeneity of human atherosclerotic plaques using a special catheter, for the first time in vivo. He has recently worked on invasive treatments for persistent hypertension with innovative renal artery denervation techniques (chemical denervation).
He has presented the results of his research in over 3,500 scientific conference abstracts and over 260 lectures as a guest speaker.
He has published over 1685 scientific articles in peer-review medical journals. The index h for these publications is 124. According to the Publons database, he ranks first among researchers worldwide regarding the number of publications, regardless of scientific field. He has edited 6 medical books of international publication and has written chapters in 13 international books. He was the editor-in-chief of the scientific journal "Hellenic Cardiology", Section Editor in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the editorial teams of other international, scientific journals. According to the prestigious Journal Clinical Diagnosis Research (Jan 2015) he is the researcher with the most original research publications in the last 20 years.
He was awarded the title of "Elite Reviewer" by the American Journal of Cardiology (JACC) in recognition of his full contribution to scientific publications (2005) while the international journal Clinical Cardiology dedicated a special article to him. of 2007. The American College of Cardiology has awarded him the Simon Dack Award (2011), which is awarded each year to the scientist with the most important contribution to the College's Journal of Cardiology (JACC - Cardiovascular Interventions and JACC - Cardiovascular Imaging).
He is currently an elected member of the Hellenic Parliament, a member of the Standing Committee on Social Affairs and Special Standing Committee on Research and Technology of the Hellenic Parliament, and the President of the Friendship Group Greece - France.
