Thom Brooks - Biography#

Thom Brooks is the Dean & Professor of Law and Government at Durham University's Law School. He is an Associate Member of Durham's Philosophy Department and School of Government and International Affairs. He was educated in the US, Ireland and UK with MA 1st class at University College Dublin and PhD at the University of Sheffield in Philosophy. Brooks has held visiting positions at Chicago, Columbia, Cote d'Azur, Harvard, LUISS, NYU, Oxford, Penn, St Andrews, Uppsala and Yale. He was formerly at Newcastle University. He has written five books (including two with second editions), edited 24 books and published over 160 articles and chapters. Brooks has given over 300 lectures, including at Amsterdam, Boston, Bowling Green State, Cambridge, Chicago, City University of Hong Kong, Edinburgh, Georgia State, Ghent, Groningen, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, King's College London, KU Leuven, Lund, LUISS, Oslo, Oxford, Sciences Po, U Conn, Uppsala, Vanderbilt and Yale. He was won external funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the European Union. He was chair of the Academy of Finland Philosophy panel in 2014 serving it four times. Brooks has over 2,000 media appearances since 2013 with regular appearances on television (BBC, ITV, Sky News, Deutsche Welle, Euronews, France 24), radio (BBC Radio 4, BBC 5 Live, LBC) and he has written over 200 columns for the Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The Independent, New Statesman, The Times and others. Since 2014, Brooks has advised the UK Labour Party on immigration law and policy, including the 2015, 2017 and 2019 election manifestos. He is an elected executive board member of the Fabian Society, the UK's oldest think tank, and the President of the Society of Legal Scholars, the oldest and largest learned society for academic lawyers.
