Artificial-enzymes-armed Bifidobacterium longum probiotics for alleviating intestinal inflammation and microbiota dysbiosis. Nat Nanotechnol. 2023;18(6):617-627. (IF 38.3). Significance: A ground-breaking chemical engineering strategy to improve the performance of probiotics to treat inflammatory bowel disease by reshaping the intestinal barrier functions and restoring the gut microbiota. This formula has been submitted to HSA for clinical translation.
2. Shi C, Zhang Q, Yao Y, Zeng F, Du C, Nijiati S, Wen X, Zhang X, Yang H, Chen H, Guo Z, Zhang X, Gao J, Guo W, Chen X*, Zhou Z*. Targeting the activity of T cells by membrane surface redox regulation for cancer theranostics. Nat Nanotechnol. 2023;18(1):86-97. (IF 38.3). Significance: This is an elegant design of nanodecoy to measure T cell activity by non-invasive MR imaging and reactivate exhausted T cells to improve various forms of adoptive T cell therapy, including CAR-T therapy.
3. Huang P, Jiang L, Pan H, Ding L, Zhou B, Zhao M, Zou J, Li B, Qi M, Deng H, Zhou Y, Chen X*. An Integrated Polymeric mRNA Vaccine without Inflammation Side Effects for Cellular Immunity Mediated Cancer Therapy. Adv Mater. 2023;35(3):e2207471. (IF 29.4). Significance: This study reported a series of alternating copolymer-based mRNA cancer vaccine vectors that are potent and yet have negligible inflammatory side effects as a replacement of the currently used lipid nanoparticles (LNP).
4. Bhatia S, Chen X*, Dobrovolskaia M, Lammers T. Cancer Nanomedicine. Nat Rev Cancer, 2022;22:550–556. (IF 78.5). Significance: This is an expert opinion about how we can fulfil the great promise of nanomedicine for the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with cancer. This paper also lays ground for future research direction and clinical translation of cancer nanomedicine.
5. Tian R, Feng X, Wei L, Dai D, Ma Y, Pan H, Ge S, Bai L, Ke C, Liu Y, Lang L, Zhu S, Sun H, Yu Y, Chen X*. A genetic engineering strategy for editing near-infrared-II fluorophores. Nat Commun. 2022;13(1):2853. (IF 16.6). Significance: This is the first of its kind genetic strategy to design optical dyes in the second near-infrared window for non-invasive, real-time, and highly sensitive imaging of molecular/cellular level activities.

Nat Biomed Eng. 2020;4(11):1102-1116. (IF 29.2). Significance: This study develops a novel in situ cancer vaccination approach by reducing apoptosis signaling for the generation of systemic cytotoxic T-cell responses and immunological memory.
8. Chen H, Zhang W, Zhu G, Xie J, Chen X. Rethinking cancer nanotheranostics. Nat Rev Mater. 2017;2:17024. (IF 76.7). Significance: This review article emphasizes the importance of in vitro diagnostics and in vivo imaging in patient stratification, drug-release monitoring, imaging-guided focal therapy and post-treatment response monitoring. It also articulates how we can better conduct preclinical testing of nanotechnologies to better translate nanomedicine into clinics.
