- 1981 - 1984 Edinburgh University, Department of Molecular Biology, Ph.D. with Professor Neil Willetts. Awarded a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology in December 1984 - Title of thesis: The transposable elements and conjugation system of the IncN plasmid R46

- 1985 - 1988 Institute for Genetics, University of Cologne and Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research, Cologne - Received a Royal Society European Exchange Fellowship and an EMBO long-term Fellowship to work as a post doctoral fellow with Professor Peter Starlinger
