Marie-Claude MAUREL is currently Chair Professor of Geography at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS, Paris, France). Member of the « Centre d’études des mondes russe, caucasien et centre-européen ».

She has been Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at the Paul Valery University of Montpellier from 1970 to 1985, then Full Professor from 1986 to 1997. She was nominated Junior Member of the Institut universitaire de France (IUF) from 1991 to 1996.
She was appointed Director of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences at the CNRS, in Paris, from 1997 to 2001, and after her mandate she was recruited as Chair Professor at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS, Paris) in 2002.
In 2005 she was selected to be a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies ‘Collegium Budapest’ in Hungary.
From 2006 to 2010, she has served as Director of the French Research Center in Social Sciences (CEFRES) in Prague, Czech Republic.
From 2010 to 2013, she was appointed Director of the Institut Universitaire de France, an institution devoted to the promotion of academic excellence.
She became a Panel member of SH3 “Environment and society” for Advanced Grants of the European Research Council (ERC) in 2011 and has taken part in the selection process in 2011, 2013 and 2015.
She was appointed as a Member of the “Environment, space and population” panel for project grants, FCT Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, (Foundation for Science and Technology), Portugal (April-June 2015).

As a specialist in Human and Social Geography, Marie-Claude Maurel has authored a dozen of books and more than a hundred articles on Central and Eastern European studies, mainly dealing with the transformations of rural societies.
