Ekhard Salje - Biography#

Ekhard K.H. Salje benefits of a double nationality, British and German . He received in 1972 his PhD in Physics, Univ. Hanover, Germany. First, he was Head of Department at the Institute for Crystallography and Petrology at the Leibniz University Hannover, from 1983 to 1985. In 1985 he moved to Cambridge, where he was appointed Lecturer, then Reader in Mineral Physics/Crystallography and since 1992, Professor of Mineralogy and Petrology.

In Cambridge, he has been Head of the Department of Earth Sciences, from 1998 to 2008 and President of the Clare Hall College, from 2001 to 2008. He had six visiting professorships (France, Spain, Germany, USA, China). He chaired the European Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) Network on Mineral Transformation (1997-1999) and occupied various advisor positions in Germany, UK and France and was board member of European exchange programs (INTAS, von Humboldt Association that he chaired from 2004 to 2008, European Trust that he chaired from 2007 to 2010).

Professor Salje was recognized by several Academies: Leopoldina (1994), Royal Society (1996), The Royal Society of Arts(1996), Reial Acadèmia de Ciències i Arts de Barcelona (2011). He received numerous awards, including the Abraham-Gottlob-Werner medal in mineralogy (1994) and Agricola medal for Applied Mineralogy (2006) of the German Mineralogical Society (DMG), Schlumberger medal of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain (1998), Humboldt Prize of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2000).

He is Fellow of the Institute of Physics (1996) and the Geological Society (1996) and Honorary Fellow of Darwin (2001) and Clare Hall (2010) Colleges, in Cambridge. He received in 2004 the French Palmes Academiques and in 2006 the German Cross of the Order of Merit, first class. He has been honored by the Universities of Xi'an Jiaotong and of Würzburg.
